How to Use Tarot Cards For Spellwork

It’s common knowledge that Tarot cards are a tool for divination, but did you know that many Wiccans and people interested in the supernatural use Tarot cards in their spellwork? The mystical nature of Tarot cards makes it easy for them to be used in many supernatural applications. Many Tarot decks are inexpensive and something that Wiccans, Pagans, Witches, and people with supernatural interests have on hand. They’re an easy and affordable way to conduct spells at any time of the day or night.

Most spells use some kind of tangible items like candles, crystals, and herbs to represent something else. Since Tarot cards have such powerful symbolic meaning, they are perfect to use for spellwork. The size of a Tarot deck means that you have a wide array of symbols to choose from. To use Tarot cards for a spell, choose one that may have a meaning that symbolizes your intent. For this to be effective, you should at least have a basic understanding of the meaning of each card in a Tarot deck.

Some cards are more magical than others in Tarot are and have stronger meanings. You’ll most likely end up using mostly Trump cards for your spell as these cards are more powerful than the cards of the Minor Arcana. Here are a few Trump cards you may be interested in using for your spells:

The Magician

The Magician is a good card to use when you are invoking a spell. The Magician himself represents the spiritual energy that is moving through all of us. Use the Magician card and ask him to watch over you as you cast your spells.

The High Priestess

Use the High Priestess card when you are looking for more guidance. She represents intuition and she will help you see with more clarity. Call upon this card when you need wisdom or are seeking your inner truth.

The Death Card

Although the imagery of this card may be ominous, invoke the Death card when you are looking for a new beginning. The Death card signifies endings and using this card in a spell will clear the path for change. Use the Death card when you’re trying to stop something.

The Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune represents movement. Call upon this card when you’re feeling stuck and need some momentum in your life. You can use the Wheel of Fortune to awaken dormant energy and change your luck.

Basic Tarot Spells

The nice thing about using Tarot in your spellwork is that you have the freedom to make up your own spell to suit your needs. However, if you’re new to Tarot spells or just looking for some inspiration here are a few spells you can try:

The Tarot Wish Spell

This is a straightforward spell that can be easily modified to fit your needs. For this spell you’ll need:

  • A Tarot card that represents your wish
  • One white candle
  • A piece of clear quartz
  • White yarn or string

Before you begin this spell you’ll need to choose a card that symbolizes your intent. Once you have your card, tie the yarn around it and set it on your altar.

Next you’ll light the candle and hold the crystal in your hand.

For this spell to work properly, you’ll need to understand what the symbols on the card you chose represent. You can look at the Tarot Interpretation page on Tarot Prophet for more information about the cards.

Once you have a basic understanding of the card, focus on the images on the card and what they represent in regards to your wish. Hold this image and meaning in your mind while you speak your wish aloud.

After you have put your wish out there to the universe, you’ll want to set the stone atop the card and let the candle burn down. Put the card under your pillow and keep it there until your wish comes true.

Tarot Reading Spell

This spell is especially useful for Tarot card readers even ones who don’t feel like they have any sort of magic. Using this spell will help you give clearer and more accurate readings. It’s also a good way to bless a new deck of Tarot cards.

For this spell you’ll need:

  • Your Tarot card deck
  • Piece of purple fabric (paper will do)
  • 1 piece of amethyst

Take the cards out of their box and place them on your altar or the area where you conduct your Tarot readings. Put the purple fabric over the cards and recite the following spell several times:

Bring sight to my cards,
Open my eyes.
Bring sight to my cards,
Open my mind.

Once you feel like you’ve invoked the spell enough times, place the amethyst atop the deck and leave it for 3 days. After this, store the cards wrapped in the purple fabric to keep the magic intact.

Tarot spells can be a really useful part of your arsenal as a Tarot card reader, Wiccan, or someone who’s just interested in the supernatural. There aren’t really any rules when it comes to Tarot spells. The only thing you need to know is the basic meanings of the Tarot cards so that you can choose the one that is most appropriate for your situation.
