How To Use Tarot For Your Relationships

Although it’s common knowledge that people turn to Tarot spreads to learn about their romantic relationship questions, A relationship Tarot spread can also be used in the search for answering questions about any of your other types of relationships. If you’re having problems with a co-worker or a family member, a relationship Tarot spread reading is just what you need to shine some light on the truth about your relationship with these people.

These Tarot spreads are a great way to figure out how you and your unassuming partner can improve the way you relate to each other. So grab a Tarot deck and let’s get started with some insightful Tarot spreads.

Remember, any relationship Tarot spread can be modified to fit whatever needs you or the querent has, so don’t be afraid to change any relationship Tarot spread slightly if the spreads below aren’t exactly right for your needs.

The Best Tarot Spreads for Relationships

There is a plethora of different ways that you can consult the Tarot deck to reveal insights into any type of relationship. Here I’ve listed some of the best love Tarot spreads to use when you or the querent is facing conflict within your relationships or if you have any questions about a relationship.

Do remember that Tarot spreads are an art and the Tarot cards consider a relationship as it currently stands, offering advice on how to better a relationship and showing the areas where the relationship is struggling. The outcome of any Tarot reading can change, depending on the steps the querent takes after finishing the Tarot spreads. Therefore, even if the Tarot spreads say a love relationship is not likely to survive an issue there is a chance that the querent and their partner could resolve the issue, given the querent follows the advice given in the rest of the Tarot spread.

As with all Tarot spreads, it’s important to shuffle the cards in the deck mindfully before getting started with these relationship Tarot spreads. The querent should keep their question in mind from the moment they pick up the Tarot deck until they put the cards back down. Once the Tarot cards are shuffled it’s up to the reader to choose which of the Tarot spreads below suit the situation the best. Again, if the querent has questions about their romantic partner, any of these Tarot spreads can be modified to suit their specific needs.

General Relationship Spread

This is a pretty basic relationship Tarot spread that can be modified to suit whatever type of relationship the querent has, with any type of partner. Whether it is a new love relationship that the querent isn’t quite sure about or an old friendship that’s heading through some rocky terrain, a love relationship or a platonic friendship, this spread explores the needs and views of both parties in the relationship. For this Tarot spread to work, the querent needs to keep their partner and a specific question relating to them in mind. For the best results in general Tarot spreads like this one the querent should focus on the relationship dynamic between them and their partner. For example, “Why do I feel like… When…”, but a broader question like “What is my relationship with…” could also work. In the latter case, the answers from the Tarot cards will be broader.

Card 1: This reveals how the querent views their romantic or platonic partner. What is their general view of their partner? How does the partner make the querent feel? Keep in mind that these can be preconceived ideas that aren’t a true reflection of the partner, but rather the interpretation of them as the querent sees them.

Card 2: This reveals how the partner sees the querent. As with the first card, what is depicted here is not necessarily what the querent is, but how they come across to the other party in the relationship.

Card 3: This reveals the querent’s needs. Are they in need of emotional, physical or spiritual support? Are they at ease in their own life or is something lacking?

Card 4: This reveals the needs of the other party. As with the third card, this is a depiction of what the querent’s partner’s needs are, regardless of the relationship. The querent may offer support in these needs, but it is not necessarily their fault that their partner has these needs.

Card 5: This reveals the current state of the relationship. The relationship dynamic is depicted here. Any underlying energies that the querent may not yet be aware of can be revealed in this card.

Card 6: This reveals the path the querent would like the relationship to follow. It is their own ideal. If this card is negative the querent likely feels they do not deserve the other person or they are holding onto past relationships that ended badly and they are subconsciously steering this relationship in the same direction.

Card 7: This reveals the path the querent’s partner would like the relationship to follow. As with the sixth card, this is the other person’s ideal, whether it is conscious or unconscious. Very few of us stay in a relationship if they consciously wish it to end, therefore, if this is a negative card, the querent shouldn’t take it personally but rather try to understand that the other party may have some issues to work through before the relationship can truly flourish.

Card 8: This reveals the things the querent should consider about the relationship. This is the Tarot’s objective view of the whole relationship. Anything depicted here, whether positive or negative, should be duly considered. Is a negative card just a temporary phase or does it seem a fixed problem for the querent? Will they be able to resolve the issue?

Card 9: This is the outcome and it reveals the answer to the initial question. If it is a positive card the relationship is likely to last for some time if it is a negative card the two people in the relationship should work towards having a similar goal or outlook regarding the relationship. If they can resolve their differences the outcome of future Tarot spreads can be very different.

Harsh Truth

This is a great Tarot spread when the querent wants to learn the truth about a relationship. Unlike the other Tarot spreads listed here, it will reveal exactly what the querent needs to know, rather than what they wish were true. The Tarot cards will get to the bottom of any issue in any relationship.

NOTE: If the querent wants to know, for example, whether their partner has been unfaithful and a card depicting anything of the sort appears in the spread it may be pointing towards the querent’s doubts rather than the actual act of cheating. It is therefore of utmost importance that the querent’s concern be taken into consideration during the reading before they ruin a perfectly good relationship due to personal doubts which have been seen to be “solidified” by any of the cards in this Tarot reading.

This is a very powerful Tarot spread and should not be attempted if the reader is not confident that they can successfully navigate the querent through the truths that are revealed by the cards. This Tarot spread’s accuracy relies on the reader’s ability to intuit what the real truth the Tarot is trying to reveal about a situation is, rather than just reading the cards at face value and therefore this Tarot reading is better suited to more experienced Tarot readers.

Take a look at this in-depth guide if you are a beginner at Tarot spreads and want to improve your Love Tarot Reading skills. For now, it may be a good idea to look at one of the other Tarot spreads listed here.

Card 1: This reveals what the querent wants to be true. It is their deepest desire. If this card is negative the querent is working against their partner and the relationship and they need to let go of any unresolved or past conflicts within themselves.

Card 2: This reveals what the querent doesn’t want to be true. If this card is positive the same counts as for the first card. The querent may be, consciously or unconsciously, sabotaging the health of the relationship due to personal issues.

Card 3: This reveals what is true. If this card reveals the querent’s doubts it is more likely that it is referring to the emotional act of doubting, rather than confirming that the doubts are true.

Card 4: This reveals what the querent wants to happen. Again, if this is a negative card the querent is acting in such a way to bring these things to pass, whether they realize it or not.

Card 5: This reveals what the querent doesn’t want to happen. If this is a positive card the querent is afraid that this positive thing will happen and they need to look inside themselves to find the reason for this. If this is a negative card they should try not to focus on it as it may bring the negative to pass as they are subconsciously pulling that energy and situation towards them.

Card 6: This card reveals what will happen. The outcome is based on the energies as they currently are. Therefore if any of the preceding cards warn that the querent is consciously or unconsciously sabotaging the relationship and they actively start taking the Tarot’s advice and work to reverse these effects the outcome can change.

Sibling Rivalry Spread

This Tarot spread works well for a parent seeking out guidance on how to help their children work through their problems. It examines the relationship between the two siblings and their parents, the querent. Sibling rivalry Tarot spreads can also work for co-workers or friends, where the querent feels as though they are the referee between two other people. In this case, just replace the “child” with “rival”. Clearly identify child/rival #1 and child/rival #2 before the reading starts.

Card 1: This reveals how child #1 sees child #2. This is not necessarily an accurate depiction, but can be an emotional one. Over time resentment and anger can alter the image, and actions, of the second child, making them look worse than they usually are. If this is a positive card child #1 may be jealous of these qualities in child #2.

Card 2: This reveals child #1’s part in the problem. It takes two to tango and neither of the children will be completely innocent. If this is a positive card child #1 may be masking their own emotional or physical shortcomings by acting in this way.

Card 3: This reveals the querent’s part in the problem as regards child #1. As the “parent” the querent may be meddling and making things worse for the two children If this is a positive card child #1 sees these positive actions as aimed against them. Is the parent praising child #2 or treating child #1 unfairly, without the same consideration they show for child #2? Remember, not all siblings search for the same kind of praise or attention.

Card 4: This reveals how child #2 sees child #1. This works the same as for the first card, but the roles are reversed.

Card 5: This reveals child #2’s part in the problem. The same applies to the second card, regarding child #2.

Card 6: This reveals the querent’s part in the problem as regards child #2. The same applies to the third card.

NOTE: At this point in these rivalry Tarot spreads it is wise to take a look at the six preceding Tarot cards at this point. Discern see how the pairs correlate to and differ from each other to get a clear idea of the emotional relationship dynamic before continuing to draw the rest of the cards.

Card 7: This reveals what querent needs to do with regards to child #1. Relate this card back to the first three cards to determine a clear course of action. If this is a negative card child #1 may need some tough love to get a new perspective of the situation. But, pay careful attention to the third card so as not to aggravate the situation and work on resolving the issue pointed out in the second card. The first card will be naturally resolved as the situation changes.

Card 8: This reveals what querent needs to do with regards to child #2. Relate this card back to the fourth, fifth and sixth cards to determine a clear course of action. If this is a negative card child #2 may need some tough love to get a new perspective of the situation. But, pay careful attention to the sixth card so as not to aggravate the situation and work on resolving the issue pointed out in the fifth card. The fourth card will be naturally resolved as the situation changes.

Card 9: This asks “Will the situation improve?” Instead of just looking for a positive or negative response, search for the full meaning of the card to determine exactly why or why not. This can add valuable insight into the course of action the querent should take (as shown by cards seven and eight). This outcome is based on the emotional and physical aspects of the situation as it currently stands and is, therefore, open to change depending on how the querent proceeds given the warnings and advice the Tarot reading has offered them.

Dealing with Difficult Relationships

Unfortunately, we all probably have difficult relationships in our lives. These relationships can be hard to deal with and can make you feel stressed. This Tarot spread is great for helping the querent examine these types of relationships.

Card 1: This card examines the emotional effects, how the other party makes the querent feel uncomfortable. It goes at the bottom because it’s digging at the truth behind the situation. If it is a positive card the querent may feel that the other party is pretentious in this way or they may be jealous of this quality in them.

Card 2: This card reveals the lessons that the querent can learn from their interactions with the other party. This may not be easy for the querent to accept, but we are faced with challenges in order to learn and by learning from their interactions with this person they may come to resent them less.

Card 3: This card reveals what types of precautions the querent should take when dealing with a difficult party. Although this can be a valuable learning experience it is always wise to be prepared. If this is a negative card the querent should guard against and avoid what is depicted. If it is a positive card the querent should adopt these behaviors around the difficult party to disarm them.

Card 4: This card reveals how other people see the relationship. Sometimes a little bit of outside perspective is needed, especially if the querent feels as though they are the only one who has issues with this person.

Card 5: This card reveals what else the querent needs to know about this relationship. This can be any messages, warnings or guidance they need to deal with the difficult aspects of this relationship.

True Friends

It’s important for everyone to have at least one friend that they can rely on. Having healthy platonic relationships helps us to stay grounded. In the search for true friendship, it can be difficult to find a real friend, but this Tarot spread will look at the possibilities of the querent finding one. If the querent is in search of love, this Tarot spread can easily be altered into a True Love spread by simply replacing “friend” with “lover”.

Card 1: This card answers whether the querent will find a true friend. A negative card may suggest that the querent needs to work through some personal issues and learn to love themselves before the time is right to make a true friend or that they already have a true friend. The outcome of their search for a true friend will depend on what is depicted in conjunction with the rest of the Tarot reading, especially the second card.

Card 2: This card reveals when the querent will find a true friend. Instead of indicating a specific time, this card will reveal what needs to happen before the querent meets their true friend. It may also indicate that they have already met this friend.

Card 3: This card reveals where the querent will find their true friend. It is generally depicted in a situation rather than a location, although both are possible, so look at the image on the card closely.

Card 4: This card reveals what the friend will be like. If this is a negative card it only depicts certain aspects of the friend and this may be the first impression the querent gets of them, but their attitude towards them may change as they get to know them as a friend.

Card 5: This card will reveal if this friendship will last a lifetime or only a short time. Again, this is not a definitive answer, although that is also possible. It is much more likely that this will depict the event at which the relationship will terminate, whether that happens in a couple of days or decades or at all, will depend on the querent’s response to the event depicted here. If this is a positive card it can also indicate that this is when the relationship will truly solidify or even change into a different type of relationship, possibly a love relationship.

We’ve all had times in life where we’ve had problems with those close to us.
